ROV Team Sweeps MATE ROV Competition!

April 17, 2004

Last April, the Cabrillo High School Aquarium/Marine Technology Institute put its premier Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) program to the ultimate test: The Monterey Bay Regional ROV Competition. On April 17, 2004, ROV teams from various California schools and Canada congregated in the Monterey Bay area for one of the most unique and intriguing competitions available for high schools students. Sponsored by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE), this competition challenged our very own Cabrillo High School Aquarium/Marine Technology Institute students to test the fruits of their labor in a “real world” setting.

We are proud to announce the Cabrillo "Skunkworks ROV" and the Cabrillo "A* TEAM" took first and second place at this extraordinary test of skill and camaraderie. The teams also secured the award for most innovative ROV design, a feat that only augments the incredible sensation of victory.

The two teams then competed at the national competition held at the University of California, Santa Barbara last June. All the teams that competed at the Nationals displayed a tremendous amount of skill and workmanship and we are honored to have competed amongst such individuals. New ideas and new faces will be competing in the 2005 competitions. Go Team Cabrillo!
