Derek Ramsey
Derek Ramsey is Head Curator of Communications and Public Relations. Derek’s love for the ocean and curiosity resulted in him being accepted into the Marine Technology Institute during his sophomore year. However, it was during his junior year that he really showed that he had what it takes to take on the tremendous task of being an Aquarium Head Curator. That year, Derek instructed the 5th grade water density labs that we host throughout the school year. He also played a leadership role in designing and hosting the JASON Project 2007 “Monster Storms” tours in which we hosted local 4th grade classes. Derek has many great goals to improve the program and we look forward to working with him this year. As an ambassador of the Cabrillo High School Aquarium he is actively sought out by the community and beyond to speak about the many facets of the Aquarium program.
Derek is going to be a senior and plans on going to a university, preferably Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California. He plans on studying civil, structural, or architectural Engineering. “I really want to get a well rounded education so I can utilize every aspect of it in the real world. That is one of the reasons why I am in the tourism program.” He plans on using the things he learns in this program for a great advantage toward success. For a side thing he also likes graphic design or things like the website which he is also the coordinator of. I like to see things that I have actually contributed to and made them happen.
For Derek’s senior project he is Designing and building a "Wet Laboratory" in a 12' x 30' room that can be used by the ROV team, students, and teachers. The room is going to be thematic and the theme will be based on a submarine. “I really look forward to this project and working with Robert Ranard, Greg Eisen, and Michelle Poquette on this great idea. Derek’s going to be in ASB (Associated Student Body) next year as well as a Mentor program for incoming freshman called F.A.M (Friends and Mentors). Next year is going to be a busy year with classes like AP Physics and having to come up with plans for upcoming presentations for the aquarium in one night. “It will be complicated at times but I hope to do my best and move on with life.”
