Dolphin Articulation and Fossil

Immediately on the left as you enter our facility you can see our dolphin articulation project and dolphin fossil display.  Students at Cabrillo reconstructed the skeleton during the 1994-1997 school years, and it made its debut in 1997. Mr. Newman Whitmire, teacher, was the advisor for this project and a member of the Marine Mammal Rescue organization.

Just below the articulation display you will see our Dolphin Fossil Display. This large dolphin fossil was discovered by Leo Segura in the Johns-Manville Corporation Crushing Plant in 1976. The geological deposit in which it was found is known as the Monterey Formation and has been dated with the fission track method to seven million years old.
