CORALIFE

Energy Savers Unlimited, Inc./CORALIFE- We thank Omer Dersom for the supplies and equipment that he has provided Cabrillo High School students and staff for use in the aquarium. Thanks to Coralife, one of the primary showpieces of the Carbrillo Aquarium is our surround-sound theater. The theater, shaped in the form of a light house, has all multimedia capabilities, with both DVD and VCR format. We are also pleased to mention that all of our displays that need artificial light have been supplied by Energy Saver.

Ventua Web Design

Ventura Web Design was founded by current CEO Kevin Richards (CHS 1998). After years of mentoring from Aquarium Founder and current Director of Aquarium Executive Committee, Dave Long, Kevin took the skills he developed at Cabrillo and created a worldclass website design company. Ventura Web Design is an excellent example of the Aquarium's ability to promote cross-curriculum education.

Ace Hardware

Ace Hardware, Lompoc has provided the Aquarium with an assortment of tools to assist with internal construction and maintenance activities.

For the last 10 years, Aquaria Inc./Marineland Aquarium Products has been a major player in the continued growth of the hands-on, cross-curriculum, project-based facility at Cabrillo High School. We would like to personally thank Dr. Tim Hovanec, Stan Owens, Les Wilson, and all the staff at Aquaria Inc. for the commitment they have made to the students K-12 in the Lompoc Unified School District. Without their support, this project would not be possible.

MARINE ENVIRONMENT graciously donates salt, in a way providing the lifeblood for this one-of-a-kind facility. The staff and animals of our Aquarium want to thank MARINE ENVIRONMENT and Mike Delprete. Marine Environment and CEO Mike Delprete have truly been a driving force behind the Cabrillo High School Aquarium’s delivery of high-quality displays and student research. Deprete's superior two-part formula has made the Aquarium a dazzling showcase of temperate marine life and warm-water reefs.

The Regional Alliance for Information Network (R.A.I.N.) is responsible for the Cabrillo High School Aquarium website hosting. Through generous technical support and donation of equipment, R.A.I.N. helps the Cabrillo Aquarium project live images throughout the world on a daily basis.

RAINBOW MAGNIFICATION BY CTI/VTEK-For the last year we have had the chance to use our new Microscopic Monitors developed from CTI/VTEK. Our Rainbow Magnification Units have become an important tool for all visitors of the Cabrillo High School Aquarium. We would like to personally thank Ron Odell and CTI/VTEK for making our Touch Tank Area more interesting.

Shell Oil Corporation gave CHS approximately $6000 over a three-year period to help students and staff develop projects that would provide a better understanding of the Central California coastline and the delicate animals that live in the Santa Barbara Channel.

Texaco Oil Corporation was generous in giving Cabrillo High School Aquarium a $5000 check for the development of the multimedia station.

Point Pedernales Work Group: This conglomerate makes up all of the oil companies that work on the Central Coast and in the Santa Barbara Channel. They have helped students by financing individual projects.

Santa Barbara Sea Center, under the direction of Gary Robinson, has provided both animals and advice and a constant means of support for the Cabrillo High School Aquarium. Mr. Robinson was one of the original board members who strongly supported the concept of hands-on-learning in public education.

Rotary Clubs of Vandenberg Village and Lompoc: Our program needed the help of the local business community, and we have received advice, direction, and funding from our local business community. Without their support it would have been impossible for this project to gain the credibility necessary to bring larger corporate organizations under the umbrella of our partnership. A special thanks is given for the donation of $6000 worth of computer equipment!

IBM / Mount Desert West Computers: Both of these organizations have been a part of our program for the last six years. They have helped to project the image and the philosophies of the Cabrillo High School Aquarium to the computer world. Without their support it would have been difficult to develop our computer awareness.

Dr. Bernard Weinstock was the first to believe in the Cabrillo High School Aquarium and its effect on student learning. Over a ten-year period he has donated thousands of dollars and a tremendous amount of personal time to make sure that this project is successful.

Lompoc Dive Club has become an important part in developing displays and collecting animals that might be difficult to obtain in tidal pool areas. Their individual abilities and equipment have helped to bring our students and staff a little bit closer to our undersea world.

University of California at Santa Barbara is considered one of the finest marine science programs in the nation. With the help of Dr. M.P. Fuller, we have been able to partner students with both undergarduate and graduate students in areas of marine studies. The opportunity to work with this quality of marine science staff in such a close proximity to our aquarium has been a tremendous asset.

Catalina Island Marine Institute has played a major role in helping our students have a better understanding of our natural sea environment. Over the last six years we have been able to travel to Catalina Island and participate in a four-day stay of learning and snorkeling in the warm waters off the California coast. They have helped supply us with animals that are indigenous to the region off Catalina Island.

California Aquarium Supply House: California Aquarium Supply House and owner, Mike Del Prete, has made sure that all of our aquatic animals have been supplied with the best grade of aquarium salt possible. Environmental marine salt has been vital to the growth and development of our program, as well as the animals that swim in our waters.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has been very helpful to the Cabrillo Aquarium. From everything to helping setup tanks to donating the dolphin display.

Celite Corporation, a local business, mining diatomaceous earth, one of the largest of its kind in the world, partnered with CHS aquarium in monitoring the growth of bacteria on filter media. This partnership combined chemists from Celite Corp. and students from Cabrillo High School. Over the period of one year the students tested the qualities of three different types of filtration media. For this study Celite granted $5000. to the Aquarium for this combined effort. This is an example of major industry and high school students working together for the benefit of both.

Unocal: Major industry has played an important role in the Santa Barbara channel. There continues to be controversy of the benefit drilling for oil along the central coast of California. The Cabrillo Aquarium found that Unocal and most of the major oil companies were helpful in giving direction and funding to our project. Unocal was the first to realize the potential of the CHS Aquarium and its effect on education in regards to hands-on-learning and partnershipping. Over a five year period Cabrillo Aquarium received $10,000 for the development of its shallow water reef habitat.

The Department of Fish & Game is one of our outstanding partnerships. Because of the very tight regulations and the stringent demands placed on certification of any requests made to them we realized developing a fish hatchery would take time. We needed to develop credibility over a two-year period that would help F&G better understand our goals for using the Cabrillo High School Aquarium as a means of educating our students and community about the St.Ynez watershed that flows into the Pacific Ocean at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Matt Church, a junior at Cabrillo High, through Paul Cleveland, manager of the Salmon Enhancement Program, Port San Luis, was able to obtain rainbow trout eggs. Matt placed the eggs in his newly developed fish hatchery and proceeded to monitor their growth and development. The ultimate thrill was when Matt was able to place 7 of his tagged rainbow trout in a local pond. Five of the seven were successfully caught by anglers in the Elks Fish Derby held for the local special needs population.

Pacific Gas & Electric's Diablo Canyon Biological Tour Guide Program has been a great help to the Cabrillo High School Aquarium. By providing mentorship and extracurricular activities, the Cabrillo Aquarium has been able to offer more opportunities to its students.

The Vandenberg Federal Credit Union has been very helpful to the Cabrillo Aquarium. Through their donation, we were able to construct and maintain our very first tank, the Warm Water Reef.
